Between the 1860s and beyond, Japanese art became something of an artistic awakening for European creators. Suddenly, there were fresh eyes upon the natural world, an appreciation for sinuous organic forms, sensual textures, and patterns that nature had been quietly perfecting all along. As one rather thoughtful observer noted in 1878, Japanese art reminded us how far we had strayed from nature's true designs through stuffy imitation, and how necessary it is to draw directly from the source.
