This is not, we must confess, your average throw. It is in fact a proper work of art, lovingly handcrafted using techniques that have been passed down through generations in Mali. Each one tells a story, and we rather fancy that yours will too.
Why Choose Our Handwoven Mud Cloth Throw
Authentically Handmade: Every single piece is woven by hand using traditional methods, which means no two throws are quite identical. Rather marvellous, that.
Ancient Craft, Modern Appeal: The mud cloth tradition, known locally as Bogolanfini, dates back centuries. Bogo means earth or mud, lan means with or by means of, and fini means cloth. The name is rather self explanatory, and also rather lovely.
Meticulously Crafted: Men hand spin and hand weave local cotton on small strip looms, creating narrow strips that are then sewn together. The cloth is washed and dried in the sun, then soaked in a mixture of pounded leaves. Women then carefully apply the mud dye using traditional bamboo or metal spatulas, creating unique patterns that may reflect personal taste, social significance, or simply good artistic instinct.
Utterly Fetching Design: Each pattern is hand drawn and finished with careful attention to detail. The designs are then washed and outlined once more, resulting in a genuinely stunning piece.
Beautifully Imperfect: The natural variations in colour and pattern are precisely what make these throws so gloriously authentic. Colour may appear slightly lighter than pictured, which we find rather charming.
