A Rather Splendid Piece of Wearable West African Craft

This is a proper handwoven mud cloth throw, made in the traditional Malian way. Bogolan, or Bogolanfini if we're being linguistically thorough, translates rather charmingly to mud cloth. It is, quite literally, cloth decorated with mud dye by artisans who know what they are doing. The name itself breaks down rather nicely: bogo means earth or mud, lan means with or by means of, and fini means cloth. Rather straightforward, really.

Why Choose Our Mud Cloth Throw

Authentically Handwoven: Each cloth is spun and woven by hand on small strip looms using local cotton. The strips are then sewn together with considerable patience and skill to create one gloriously substantial piece.

Traditionally Decorated: Women artisans apply designs by hand using pre-mixed mud dye and a small bamboo or metal spatula. The patterns and colours often reflect personal taste, social significance, or gender expression within the community. Essentially, you are acquiring a conversation piece with genuine cultural depth.

Properly Made, Start to Finish: The entire process is rather marvellous. The finished cloth is washed and dried in the sun, then soaked in a mixture of pounded leaves from local trees. Only then does it receive its mud dye and final decorations. After one more wash and outline, you have something utterly fetching.

One of a Kind Patterning: Because these are handmade by individual artisans, no two throws are identical. The patterns, colours, and finishes vary slightly. This is precisely what makes them rather good.

We Have Lots More Like This.........

Hello, we are Sostter....

Sostter began, as all good ideas do, with a lively conversation and a shared sense of frustration. Why had the world of independent design become so serious, so samey, so… beige? Where was the spark, the imagination, the sheer joy of discovering something that made you stop and stare?

We dreamt of a marketplace that celebrated difference — where curious minds could explore a world of independent brands, design-led makers, and thoughtful artisans. A space that felt exciting, human, and beautifully imperfect.

Today, Sostter brings together remarkable people and their creations — from London to Lausanne, Brooklyn to Berlin — uniting makers and discoverers through craftsmanship, creativity, and conscience. Every object tells a story, and every purchase supports an independent brand doing things differently.

This is just the beginning. But enough about us — step inside, explore our world, and see what catches your imagination.
