Circular Makers
Built to Last. Engineered to Repair. Designed to Be Refilled, Returned, and Re-stitched From the Very Start.
Circular design is a properly different conversation from upcycling. Where upcycling rescues materials after the waste has already happened, circular design tries to prevent the waste in the first place — by engineering products that can be repaired, refilled, returned, re-stitched, or recovered at end of life and put back into use. It is the more rigorous discipline of the two: the design has to account for the second, third and fourth life of the product, the supply chain has to support take-back, and the business model has to make returning the product easier than throwing it away. It is, increasingly, the standard among brands taking sustainability properly seriously rather than treating it as a marketing afterthought. The Circular Makers collection at Sostter brings together the brands building this approach into their business model from day one.
The collection is anchored by Stella Soomlais, the Tallinn leather designer whose bags are engineered with screw-fastened straps and modular components so they can be re-stitched into entirely new bags at the end of their first life. Her studio runs on a zero-waste pledge and has won the Estonian Responsible Business Index Gold Level twice. Wild Clouds, the B Corp-certified women's label, operates an active end-of-life garment reclamation programme — accepting back its own pieces to repurpose or recycle into the next collection. Bramble England takes a different angle entirely: hand-poured candle, lotion and soap refills designed to slot back into the luxury vessels customers already own — Diptyque, Jo Malone, Le Labo, and the like — keeping beautiful glass and ceramic in circulation rather than thrown away once the original candle has burned out. Safal Kids in Estonia operates one of the country's first pre-loved children's clothing programmes alongside its main product line, with each garment made on demand to remove overproduction from the equation. Modern Cloth Nappies does the obvious-but-important: replaces the approximately five thousand disposable nappies a child gets through with washable, reusable ones that often outlast a single baby and get passed down to a second or third. Bare Kind in Bristol takes back worn bamboo socks at end of life for recycling. Ethical Bedding, also B Corp, takes back old eucalyptus bedding for industrial composting at end of life. Together, this small but properly serious movement of brands is building the *end* of the product life into the *start* of the design — which is the only sustainability story that actually adds up over the long term.
