Bennetto Natural Foods was founded by Lucy Bennetto, a high school English and Drama teacher who loved chocolate but suffered migraines from the chemicals in conventional bars. She made her first chocolate from scratch in 2010 with a spice grinder, organic cocoa beans, and her students as guinea pigs. She then travelled to the Dominican Republic to see ethical cocoa sourcing firsthand, and returned to create something better. Thirteen years later, the test kitchen is still in Christchurch.

Every Bennetto bar is organic, Fairtrade, vegan, gluten-free and net climate positive — produced in Switzerland by the country's leading sustainable chocolate manufacturer, using single-origin cocoa from certified cooperatives. The brand is a certified B Corp.
